How does the service work?
The CYD system automatically encrypts, compresses and securely transmits the selected files to the CYD data.
How safe is the online backup service?
Files are encrypted and compressed for complete security. The data is stored in an around the clock monitored, secure and safe environment. Your encryted data can only be viewed by you, not even CYD can get access to your valuable data.
How do I know what files to select for backup?
Since your entire hard drive is likely much larger than the amount of storage you want to purchase on the backup server, you should be selective in the files that you choose for backup. In general, you can avoid backing up any programs that you can reinstall from a purchased CD, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.). Why backup programs that can be easily re-instaled l? Try to focus your selection on things like your "My Documents", "My Pictures" or "My Music" folders and data files of your important programs like accounting, income tax, contact management, etc. Your online backup software comes with predefined filters, which allow you to automatically select categories of files without knowing where all the files are located. Check the online help for filters to learn how they can be used. Once you are a CYD customer, you will have access to detailed program file locations. This will help you determine what files you should select for common programs.
Can I perform restores of my data on my own from the web?
Absolutely. You may perform restores of your data 24X7 through this link.
Why does your system show that I have less data than I currently have?
Your data is compressed and encrypted during the backup process. What you see reported is the compressed data size. Your data is only readable when accessed by you. The encryption and compression process provides better utilization of space and security.
What is the best way to contact CYD if I have a problem with my software or if I have questions?

What if viruses are in my selected files?
The virus will not spread in the CYD vault and presents no harm to the data or systems. If you restore the infected files to your system, the virus is restored to it's original state which could be harmful to your system. If you think you have infected files in the CYD vault and you need to restore your data, further assitance is available.
What if viruses are in other customers data that is being backed up to the CYD vault?
In order for the virus to spread or activate itself it must be executed. When data is transferred to our facilities the data is encrypted and compressed. The data is inaccessible and cannot be executed. For this same reason, you will never have to worry about your data being viewed by anyone other than someone whom you give access.
How do I delete data from the backup server?
At some point you may wish to delete selected files to free up space on your account. The CYD client can remove data from the vault at any time. To view the data stored under your account, run your online backup software and click on the folder tab labeled "Restore". In the left windowpane, Right-Click on the Desktop icon and select "Get Volume List from Server". This will show you each computer that has been backed up to your account. Now you can navigate the folders to see what data is stored on the server. To delete files, click on the button with the Red "X" to enable the Delete Files mode. Mark any files you wish to delete by clicking your mouse in the empty box next to the file(s) you wish to delete. Click the "Delete Files Now" to issue the command to delete the selected files from the server. WARNING: Once a file is deleted from the server, it can no longer be restored.
Where is my data going?
Your files are stored in the CYD vault which is maintained and monitored around the clock. The vault is supported by multiple security layers, redundant power systems and a network operations center.
Are these full backups?
The first backup of any data set is a full backup to the CYD vault. Backups that happen after the initial full are incremental or differentials. Only the data that is changed over time is actually sent offsite, this saves time and bandwidth. In some cases to get complete or incremental backups of applications, the applicaitons may need to be stopped or paused with the CYD agents. Consult your CYD support team if you are unsure of your applications requirements.
How does the CYD online backup service compare to tape backups?
Tape backups are more complex and require regular maintaince. A survey found ,34% of comapnaies fail to test their tape backups, and those that do, 77% have found tape backup failures. The CYD system is built to be similar in nature to tape systems but provides much more. Your data is stored on protected disk subsystems designed to withstand componenet failures not tape media. Data is secured, encryted and sent via the internet to our secure data center, taking away the risk of tape backup or offsite removal. concerns. Unlike tape, the CYD service can reduce complexity and cost of implementign disater recovery plans. The CYD online service is automated, secure and safe.
Can the service be scheduled or do I have to manually perform backups?
The CYD client can be set to automatically run at scheduled times or system events (startup, shutdown, etc). The backups can also be done manually any time.
What is online backup more affordable then tape?
With CYD, there is no hardware to purchase, no tapes to buy every month and nothing to monitor. Simply install the software on your existing system and schedule the backups. The cost is dependant on the amount of your compressed data in the vault. Notifications are sent via email and CYD will notify you when failed backups or no backups are occuring (see details on notifications support here ).
I need to hold on to my data for 12 months, can you help me?
CYD can archive your data to CD or DVD on a monthly basis if needed for an additional charge. These archives can be delivered to your door or kept in a seperate physical vault mainatained by CYD. The archived data stays encrypted on media, so it may be wise to be careful with password changes over time.
Can I backup several computers to one account?
CYD allows multipe systems to backup to a single account, allowing you to take full advantage of the larger support service plans.
